Mending Nets at Essaouira, Morocco by Brian Fleming

Exploring the effect of light

My fascination with the effect of light on surfaces began after a number of visits to the island of Antigua. I became interested in people involved in their public lives in the market and streets of St Johns, in the minutiae of objects surrounding them, the packaging, and what was being sold or discarded. I was struck by the rich colours and patterns of clothing and the effect of strong sunlight on them.

After my visits to Antigua this fascination has continued with further explorations of the effect of light on people, landscapes, buildings and on vegetation. I have used gouache exclusively in my work as it is especially suitable for the slow build-up of details and for expressing sharpness and clarity of light.

My work has been exhibited in Antigua and England and many of my paintings are now in private collections in the Caribbean, in England, France, Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

On this website you can view my Antigua series as well as a series of paintings depicting activities in the fishing port of Essaouira in Morocco. There are further paintings of two landscapes in France and buildings in Turkey, Croatia and England. Finally in the Plants section there are paintings of various plants in the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech, Morocco and also in my garden here in England.

I hope you enjoy looking at these images. If you would like further information or would like to leave a comment please get in touch with me by using the form on the Contact page. I would be pleased to hear from you.

You can buy Greetings Cards based on some of the paintings from this website.
